Considered by many to be the most exotic of the Seven Summits, Carstensz Pyramid towers above an equatorial rainforest jungle populated by people that have had little contact with the western world. This season we will be returning in October to climb this fascinating peak after a highly successful trip there in April 2007.
Please contact us for complete details if you would like to join our small group expedition to climb 4,884 meter (16,023') Carstensz in October, 2008.
The combination of amazing and ancient cultures, a beautiful yet remote mountain and a hugely complex bureaucracy to deal with certainly keep this mountain in a different category than most! Dates Return to top

Prerequisites The Carstensz Pyramid climb will involve a fair bit of climbing on technical rock, with short sections of class 5.8. The rock climbing is only on summit day, and there will be options for using "fixed" ropes for the steeper sections. Climbers attempting Carstensz should have previous outdoor rock climbing experience equivalent to Rock 1 or Rock 2. Lead climbing experience is not required. The summit is over 4,800 meters so acclimatization will be essential while on the climb, though previous high-altitude experience is not required. Return to top
Location Carstensz Pyramid, the highest mountain in Australia/Oceana, is located 4 degrees south of the equator in the Papua province of Indonesia on the island of New Guinea. The province of Papua, in the western half of the island of New Guinea, was previously called Irian Jaya until 2005. The eastern portion of the island is the Independent State of Papua New Guinea. New Guinea is the world’s second largest island after Greenland. Return to top
Guides Working with our partners who have many years of on-the-ground experience will allow you to thoroughly enjoy the climb and the cultural experience without having to deal with any extra stress. Return to top
Itinerary This trip is an adventure from the start to finish, so the following itinerary should be viewed as a guideline of how the trip may unfold. Due to the nature and remoteness of the region that we are visiting, many factors may impact on the "flow' of the trip. These range from bureaucratic issues, changes in local government policies, security issues in our regions of travel, helicopter and other mechanical problems, and - the usual - weather related delays. Please realize that even with careful planning well in advance there are often unforeseen developments that may delay various components of our travel. Trip cancellation insurance is strongly recommended for this adventure.
Day 1 (October 11, 2008) Group sizes on this expedition are kept small to increase the enjoyment of all members of the team, and to improve the chance of success for all. There will be a maximum of 4 members per each guide, with a maximum of two guided groups per trip. On summit day there will be one guide for every 2-3 climbers, depending on the size of the team. Equipment list for Carstensz expedition The following personal equipment is required:
When organizing your equipment, remember that the conditions on Carstensz will vary from +30 and humid on the lower mountain, to possible lows of -10 degrees Celsius on summit day. Outer clothing should be capable of venting, and you should be able to get in and out of it easily. Inner layers should be able to dry easily and retain warmth when damp. The complete expedition will be spent in equatorial rainforest with frequent rainfall and cool conditions and possible snowfall at higher elevations. Take into account your own personal "warmth rating". If you know that your hands don't warm up easily, or your feet are always cold, keep that in mind. Logistics and transportation The Carstensz Pyramid trip begins and finishes in Jakarta, Indonesia. Participants must arrange their own international travel to and from Jakarta, where you will be met and picked up by our representatives. Once in Jakarta, all transportation and logistical details are pre-arranged. When you register, a pre-trip package of information will be sent to you, as well as follow-up discussions via phone and email to ensure you are well prepared for your adventure! Return to top
