2011/12 Mount Kenya, Africa's 2nd highest mountain at 5,199 meters, is a spectacular massif towering above the rainforest jungles of central Kenya. We will be climbing a variety of routes on the 3 summits of Mt. Kenya based on participants experience - Point Lenana at 4,985 meters is suitable for strong hikers without any climbing experience, while Batian (5,199 meters) and Nelion (5,189 meters) summits offer more challenging climbing routes. We have been guiding climbing trips to Mt Kenya since 2001, including ascents of technical and non-technical routes.
Our Mt. Kenya climb is also offered in conjunction with a climb of Kilimanjaro, an excellent acclimatization climb and chance to stand on the highest mountain on the African continent and one of the Seven Summits. Cost Costs for non-technical climbs will vary based on number of people registered. Please contact us directly for more info. Included in the cost of the trip: Not included in the cost of the trip: Group sizes on this expedition are kept small to increase the enjoyment of all members of the team, and to improve the chance of success for all. There will be a maximum of 4 members per each guide, with a maximum of two guided groups per trip. If technical routes are attempted, the maximum guided ratio on the summit climbing days will be 1:1. All participants are encouraged to obtain Emergency Travel Insurance and Trip Cancellation insurance. We recommend Ingle International Insurance, for details visit their site here: Prerequisites This program is ideal for any hiker or climber in good physical fitness. Previous high altitude experience is not required, though is helpful. If you are interested in the technical ascent of either Batian or Nelion, please contact our office directly for more details. Location Mt. Kenya (5,199 meters) is situated in the center of the East African country of Kenya, and is the 2nd highest mountain on the continent of Africa. The mountain is in Mount Kenya National Park, located approx. 4 hours drive north of Nairobi. An ancient and extinct volcano, the jagged multi-summitted Mt. Kenya stands in stark contrast to the classic volcano image of neighboring Kilimanjaro. Return to top
Objectives and Itinerary Our schedule of 9 days allows enough time to comfortably acclimatize while on the mountain to give us the best chance of summitting while also being able to actually enjoy the ascent! The total length planned for the expedition includes 2 travel days and 5 days for ascending and moving camps and two extra days in case of bad weather and to allow for extra acclimatization days if needed. Day 1 Guides and Instructors This combination of local guides working with a professional Canadian Mountain guide means you will get all the local knowledge and culture in addition to the peace of mind of having an English speaking guide with many years of high altitude guiding experience from around the world (Brian has climbed and guided multiple expeditions to Aconcagua, Denali, Elbrus, Mount Logan, Vinson Massif as well as countless expeditions at home in Canada), advanced Wilderness First Aid training, modern group equipment and medical supplies! Equipment list for Mount Kenya expedition
When organizing your equipment, remember that the conditions on Kenya may vary from +30 and humid on the lower mountain with almost guaranteed heavy rain showers, to possible lows of -15 degrees Celsius on summit day. Outer clothing should be capable of venting, and you should be able to get in and out of it easily. Inner layers should be able to dry easily and retain warmth when damp. The first and last day will be spent in a rainforest on the lower slopes and often is quite wet and muddy. Take into account your own personal "warmth rating". If you know that your hands don't warm up easily, or your feet are always cold, keep that in mind! Logistics and transportation The Mt. Kenya trip begins and finishes in Nairobi, Kenya. Participants must arrange their own international travel to and from Nairobi, where you will be met and picked up by our representatives. Once the trip commences from Nairobi, all transportation, accommodation and logistical details are pre-arranged.
When you register, a pre-trip package of information will be sent to you, as well as follow-up discussions via phone and email to ensure you are well prepared for your adventure! |
